The unique landscape of coastal Baja will provide a backdrop for this in-depth art workshop taught by Susan X Billings. Using watercolor as a base, we will create compositions using pastel, charcoal, gold leaf, inks, and rubber stamps. Each participant will be provided with pre-stretched canvas, high quality watercolor papers, a journal/sketchbook, field set of watercolor paints and brushes, and a pen/ink set.

Our day begins each morning with a demo and instruction in each of the following mediums: watercolor, pastel, india ink, and conte/charcoal. The remainder of the morning will be spent with journals “in the field” as we explore the beaches, arroyos and desert landscape to gather visual information and compose ideas. After lunch we will gather in Susan’s studio for one-on-one instruction where we will expand the creative process suing an assortment of mediums to develop complete compositions. The studio is equipped with 8 workstations and all the materials necessary for collage assembly.

Our final day will be spent in the plaza and town of San Jose del Cabo where we can journal, explore and share a final “in town” dinner. We will spend our last night at the historic Tropicana Inn, near the mission and plaza. Airport transportation will be provided in the morning.

WATERCOLOR: Introducing guest watercolor artist Sarah Peterson, known for her large format rich and supple still-life watercolors (shown below). Sarah will join us in Baja to work with students in a daily 3 hour studio session. An accomplished artist, and popular teacher, her instruction will include color theory, brush technique, washes and building depth through layering.

DRAWING/JOURNALING: Taught by Susan X Billings, daily classes will help artists develop their drawing, form, value and composition. Materials include graphite, charcoal, pastels, and india ink. Every morning we will have a demo in one of these mediums, followed by the opportunity to work outdoors, finding new subjects in the desert/ocean environment of the Baja peninsula. Art IS the act of seeing, and our time spent with journals will help us experience the world in new ways.

Susan and Sarah will work one-on-one with participants to further develop your skills in both the supportive studio setting, and on our daily excursions. Journals will be used as reference for larger paintings and compositions. The studio is equipped with 8 workstations and all the materials necessary to develop complete paintings.

Our final day will be spent in the plaza and town of San Jose del Cabo where we can journal, explore and share a final dinner in town. We will spend our last night at the historic Tropicana Inn, near the mission and plaza. Airport transportation will be provided in the morning.
