Taos, New Mexico has been a transformative gathering place for artists for centuries. Let Ah Haa faculty member, painter, and workshop guru, Susie Billings take you to the edge of the red sand desert to paint, journal, and reflect in a place unlike any other. You will first travel to the Taos area, home to the Native Taos Pueblo tribe for over 1000 years. Taos was also home to the oldest art colony, the Taos Society of Artists, established in 1899. You will stay at the historic La Dona Luz Inn for your first three nights of the journey and gather at the world-famous Mabel Dodge Luhan House. Throughout the 20th century, the Luhan House has hosted some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the time, including D.H.Lawrence, Martha Graham, Ansel Adams, Carl Jung and Bob Dylan. Now it’s your turn to capture the famous sunsets and desertscapes and become part of it’s history.

While in Taos, you will also get to take a special visit to local artist, Logan Wannamaker’s clay studio for a quick lesson in throwing and firing. Clay work is an integral part of the Taos Pueblo Natives, who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. Also, you will be invited to a private talk by a local artist and viewing at Taos’s world-famous Harwood Museum of Art. The Museum is widely regarded as one of the most significant records of the booming southwestern art scene in the early 20th century.

For the second half of the journey, you will travel to nearby Abiquiu, NM, where you will experience the wonder and transformative power of the Georgia O’Keeffe Ghost Ranch. While creating amongst the towering rock walls and vivid colors that O’Keeffe created within for fifty years, Susie will engage you in a study of light and shadow within both the medium of painting and your own lives. This special retreat is limited to 9 participants, so please sign up as soon as possible.
